"So Strong I Could Lift the Weight of This Burden"
Body Dreams T-shirt, laser prints on custom wood panel
27.5 x 34.5 x 3 in
2024

This work questions the notion of strength, whether physical, emotional, spiritual, masculine or feminine. I ask myself, What is strength?
Being hard on yourself?
Armor? Protection?
Prayer?
Acceptance?
Softness?
Eggs? Eggs are protein. Protein makes you strong.

3_Zoe-Alameda-WaitingisaDeathSentence

"Waiting is a Death Sentence"
Xerox prints, tar gel, plastisol on canvas
78 x 66 in
2024

“Waiting is a Death Sentence” examines contrasts between print and paint, digital and analog, fast and slow. Transparent tar gel is used to create invisible strokes, challenging the "invisible hand" in both digital manipulation and traditional artmaking. Personal images of my hands and immediate environment are contrasted with an internet meme, prompting questions about the nature of intimacy and connection in a digitally mediated world.

"what goes inside"
Laser prints, dyed fabric, enamel on canvas
48 x 48 in
2021

7_Zoe-Alameda-fullhurt

"full hurt"
Acrylic, laser prints, graphite, thermal stickers, tar gel on canvas, resin, cement in artist’s frame
68 x 46 x 22.5 in
2023

Installation view from USC Roski's 2023 group thesis exhibition.

“full hurt” reflects on the fractured self through a combination of disparate images and objects. The work is both a freestanding sculpture and double-sided painting– a constructed form reminiscent of advertisement signage, a doorway, a portal, a human figure. Recalling it as a sculptural painting, this work retains its flatness while simultaneously trying to escape itself.

"WAY TO GO PUPPY WOLVES"
Acrylic on wood panels, cast cement, resin, silicone, plastisol, thermal stickers
30 x 14 x 1 in
2023

This work juxtaposes the softness of painting with the hardness of cement blocks, pointing to tensions between vulnerability and defense. Composed in an irregular manner, the relationship between fractured images and abstract shapes allude to a dissociated sense of self.

Artist Statement Biography

Zoe Alameda (b. 2000) is a multidisciplinary artist sitting and scrolling in Los Angeles. Combining painting, collage, and sculpture, her practice explores material identity, image culture, and self-discovery. Alameda examines the challenges of connecting with oneself and others in a world saturated with digital images and commercial messaging, often influenced by the visual and cultural landscape of Los Angeles.

Through imperfect layers of texture and flatness, Alameda uses materials like paint, Xerox prints, and found objects to reflect tensions within identity. The tactile qualities of these materials—sometimes raw, sometimes transformed—emphasize the interplay between vulnerability and strength, distraction and focus, authenticity and artificiality. Leaning on the tension between the real and the reproduced, it is often unclear whether the images in her work are painted or printed, whether they are her own or found, and how much she has manipulated them. In the search for the real self, Alameda’s practice embodies a longing for presentness and meaningful connection in today’s fragmented reality.

Alameda received her BFA at the University of Southern California in 2023 and attended the Yale Norfolk School of Art residency in 2022. She has exhibited across the United States, including recent group exhibitions at NADA New York with Swivel Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Guerrero Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), and LVL 3 (Chicago, IL). In addition to her studio practice, Alameda has organized and curated multiple exhibitions with notable highlights at SADE Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) and Lonestar Studios (Los Angeles, CA).
