Artist Statement Biography
Mary Rozzi is an Italian-American photographer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles. A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, Rozzi was mentored by industry legends such as Satoshi Saïkusa, David LaChapelle, and Michel Comte. These formative influences laid the groundwork for Rozzi's career in fashion photography, a medium she views as a powerful tool for societal expression and historical documentation.
Rozzi's work is celebrated for its intuitive elegance, formal mastery, and deep connection to her subjects. She captures the synergy between form and subject in bold portraiture and an ongoing focus on women and the body—how it is adorned, revealed, and expressed. Her commercial work includes luxury campaigns for brands like Ferragamo, YSL, La Perla, and Dior Rozzi has extensive celebrity experience, photographing subjects such as Angelina Jolie, Viola Davis, Lupita Nyong’o, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Jessica Chastain, Lil Nas X, Paris Hilton, and Yara Shahidi.
A fearless entrepreneur, Rozzi founded The September Issues in 2017, a biannual publication and platform for photographers and artists creating progressive contemporary representations of women and non-binary subjects. The acclaimed, coffee table-worthy magazine featured notable photographers, subjects, and social groups like Carlijn Jacobs, Nadine Ijewere, Quentin Jones, Alok, Winnie Harlow, Gem Fletcher, Miss Major, St Vincent, Marilyn Minter, Linder Sterling and Zanele Muholi, earning praise for its taste-making visuals and unapologetic challenge to the beauty and fashion status quo.
Rozzi is the recipient of the QUIET FELLOWSHIP. Quiet is an artist-led, human centered philanthropic organization, which supports artists of all disciplines on their artistic journey. Rozzi has risen as a mentor in the Quiet Fellowship and through this position called a Pollinator, supporting emerging and journeymen artists, find their way.
Fluent in English, French, and Italian, Rozzi continues to evolve her commitment to capturing the shifting paradigms of identity, making her a vital and influential voice in contemporary photography.
Additionally, Rozzi is a sixth-generation pyrotechnic artist, further reflecting her diverse creative heritage.
