Artist Statement Biography
Joseph Rushmore (b. 1984) is a documentary photographer based in Austin, Texas. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in the small town of Ada, Oklahoma. He grew up deep within the evangelical church, resulting in a lifelong pursuit to understand the apocalyptic worldview inherent within it. He began making photographs in 1999 as a teenager intent on documenting his personal life and the rural landscape in which he lived. For years he photographed and created other forms of art while working various manual labor jobs across Texas and Oklahoma and in 2016 he turned his eye towards documentary photography. since then he has worked for The New Yorker, New York Times, The Atlantic, Stern Magazine, Washington Post and more.
