Artist Statement
My work explores identity, belonging, memory and cultural preservation through photography, oral history and long-term engagement with my community. My ongoing practice centres on South African horse culture, tracing the familial, intergenerational and often overlooked histories that exist around horses. Through portraiture and documentary photography, I am building a counter-archive for my community that considers horses as carriers of memory, pride, labour, leisure and inheritance, while foregrounding the people who sustain these traditions.

Gabrielle Kannemeyer (b. 1989) is a photographer and visual storyteller based in District Six, Cape Town. Her practice moves between portraiture, documentary photography and long-form research to explore identity, belonging, memory and cultural preservation.
