Artist Statement Biography
My work is produced at the intersections of the psychologies of competition, masculinity, mass media, and the post-human body. Primarily influenced by the cultures of bodybuilding and organized sport, I am interested in how competition, ultra-fanaticism, and the obsession with physical transformation shape identity—particularly within a media environment where accelerated images and circulating trends embed themselves into the collective psyche.
Structured through the logics of sport, my work abstracts athletic equipment and tools into apparatuses that frame, contain, and probe desire, identity, and violence. Within these apparatuses, I encapsulate constructed images and manipulated reference material, drawing from a range of sources, including archives that celebrate football ultra-fanaticism, online bodybuilding forums, and digital fitness subcultures. Within this framework, bodily autonomy and the drive to belong are examined as they are constructed, conditioned, and externalized through processes of remarkable excess.
