If familiarity is fleeting and memory is fragmentary, what endures in their absence? In my practice, I toil with the insufficiency of recollection. Through photography, textile, and mixed media, I create retrospective visual narratives that reflect on displacement and the struggle for assimilation and echo hazy childhood memories. In these images, I combine used fabrics like denim, canvas, and linen with photographs, also printed on textiles, that portray the intimate aftermath of inhabitation. Tightly cropped video stills and photographs are stripped of wholeness and reconfigured to evoke the sensation of selective recollection. My work draws on the traditions of predominantly female quilt-makers, whose art has long been dismissed as purely utilitarian, to transform imagery of the mundane into works that are both fantastical and inescapably human.
