Artist Statement Biography

Nicole Economides (b. 1992) is a visual artist based in Athens and New York. Her practice centers on painting exploring themes of memory, migration and identity through a deeply personal yet universally resonant lens. Drawing from archival imagery and family history, her work investigates the emotional and cultural legacies of displacement and belonging. Economides holds an MFA in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design (2019) and a BFA from the University of Ioannina (2016), with additional studies at Université Paris VIII in Paris through the Erasmus program. Her work has been exhibited widely in Greece, Germany, France and the United States. Her recent solo exhibition, Sunday Afternoon, presented at Callirrhoë in Athens, reflects on transatlantic memory and identity through a body of work inspired by family photographs from the Greek diaspora. The exhibition revisited themes first explored in her earlier series, Illusion of a Home, as a Memory, using painting to evoke the intimate, often fragmented experience of home and heritage. Economides is the recipient of several prestigious awards and grants, including the Hopper Prize (2024), a Grant for Painters from The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Artist Fellowship by ARTWORKS (2022). Her work has been featured in several publications, including the Financial Times, Coveteur, Loophole, LIFO and K magazine of Kathimerini, reflecting growing international recognition of her nuanced visual storytelling and exploration of cultural identity.
