Artist Statement Biography
Mia Weiner’s work explores how the body has been represented throughout art history and asks how can we shift the gaze? the power dynamics? the narrative? Her weavings beckon the viewer into a realm where mythology intertwines with contemporary discourse on gender and femininity, and invites us to question and reimagine the world in which we live. Beginning each weaving by photographing herself alongside friends and partners, these images are then digitally manipulated before moving to the loom. Glitches or breaks in the image point to the hand of the artist and become a place for queerness to seep into the cloth. Mia Weiner received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2020) and her BFA in Fiber from the Maryland Institute College of Art (2013). She was awarded the V&A Parasol Prize by the Victoria & Albert Museum and Parasol Foundation in 2024. Her work in the permanent collection of Kunstmuseum The Hague and is currently on view in the exhibition I’ll Be Your Mirror, running through March 2026.
